Picture two real quotes: one for a single-story rambler with one continuous eave, and one for a two-story home with a bay window, a dormer and a detached garage someone also wants lit.
Averaging those two together would tell you something true about neither house. That's the reason there's no "average cost of permanent lighting" worth publishing, and why the number you actually need is the one built from your roofline, not from ours.
What actually moves the number
Length is the biggest single driver — the quote follows the run of roofline you actually want lit, so a one-story ranch with a single long eave and a two-story house with a lit front and garage come out very differently.

Complexity is the second. Returns, dormers and level changes break one continuous line into several segments, and every break is another cut, another corner and another connection point.
The system itself is the third, and it's the one people compare least before asking for a quote. Home age is a quieter fourth driver. Newer fascia is straight and sound, and the channel goes up without much prep. Older fascia sometimes needs attention — a board reset or resealed before anything is fixed to it — and that's exactly what a walk-through finds, not install day.
Some longer or more complex rooflines also need more than one controller to run the whole system reliably. That's a real cost driver a plain footage figure doesn't show, and it's exactly the kind of thing the walk-through catches before it becomes a surprise on install day.
What the number actually includes
A permanent lighting quote is one number for the whole system: the aluminum channel fixed along the eave or fascia and color-matched to the trim, the controller and app that run zones, scenes and schedules, and the installation itself.

A lower number that skips that answer isn't actually the cheaper quote once you factor in what happens in year three, and it's a fair question to bring to any walk-through before you sign anything.
How we build your quote
The process is the same one used for every quote here, and it doesn't start with a length you type in. Tell us where you are and roughly what you'd like lit. We take a look — usually from street-level and aerial photos, so there's nothing to schedule just to get started.
From there the design agrees where the run starts and stops, how many returns and corners it has to turn, and whether it needs one controller or more than one. You get back a custom design with a few options and a line-item quote, built from your actual roofline rather than a flat headline figure.
Permanent versus paying for seasonal every year
A seasonal quote is a fresh number every year, because it includes a new install this November and a takedown next January no matter what last year cost. Permanent is the opposite shape: one installation, and after that only the electricity to run it.
Put those two side by side over the years you expect to stay in the house, not over one season. A homeowner who plans to move in a year or two will usually find seasonal is the cheaper honest answer — see Christmas Light Installation Cost.
A homeowner staying for several more winters is the one for whom permanent's higher first number tends to even out.
There's a piece of this that isn't its own line on either quote: seasonal pricing already includes putting the lights away until next November, and permanent never needs that step at all, because nothing ever comes down.
It's a smaller factor than the up-front number, but it's one more thing permanent removes from the yearly ledger, not just the yearly bill.
Is it worth it?
That's the real question behind "how expensive," and it doesn't have a dollar answer. It has a years-in-the-house answer.
It tends to be worth it for the homeowner who plans on climbing that roofline once, not once a year, and who wants Christmas, another holiday and plain warm-white accent lighting out of the same run. It tends not to be worth it for a first winter in a house you haven't decided is home yet.
